On Wednesday, November 13th, Toronto Public Library Workers joined workers represented by the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions, the Ontario Library Workers Committee, CUPE Ontario, the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, and the Ontario Federation of Labour amongst many others, to attend a press conference to push the Ford government to reverse its decision to close 10 of the 17 supervised consumption sites in the province.
Library Workers know all too well the deadly impacts the closures will have on vulnerable people. Many of them are community members whom we assist everyday. Public libraries have become the frontline of the toxic drug crisis and as President of Local 4948 Brandon Haynes, noted, “pushing people out of health care facilities where they can use drugs safely doesn’t solve the crisis – it just forces people to use in the streets, or bathroom stalls”.
Please see the attached news release by OPSEU/SEFPO, and the co-signed letter by the multiple unions and labour coalitions that represent workers who deal with the toxic drug crisis everyday, that calls on the Ontario Government to do the sensible thing: support and expand lifesaving health services, rather than closing them.
Join the fight against the closures of supervised consumption sites by signing CUPE Ontario’s petition:
