Ontario Libaries and the library workers are under attack. The Toronto Public Library Workers narrowly avoided a strike in May. Both the Mississauga Public Library Workers (CUPE Local 1989) and the Essex County Public Library Workers (CUPE Local 2974 - Library) were forced to take strike action strike against an unfair employer.
Concessions, cutbacks, and precarious work are challenges faced by these workers in a predominately-female workplace. Local 1989 was able to get the employer back to the table and negotiate a settlement.
However, the 58 members of the Essex County Library are still out on strike. The Toronto Public Library Workers urge all library workers and library supporters to support this brave band of library warriors in whatever way they can.
